2020 SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROJECTS (12 STUDENTS)

Engineering Internship

Isolation and purification of Nitrogen gas from atmosphere, followed by generation of liquid nitrogen (cryogenerator). The scope of this internship project is to build a liquid nitrogen generator (used in various medical applications) using atmospheric air as a gas source. All parts of the system will be provided. Student will need to learn the theory of LN2 cryogeneration and build LN2 generator. There is a wealth of information at Wikipedia ( Liquid Nitrogen Generator and Youtube videos like DIY liquid nitrogen generator, the internship project scope will be similar with an exception of higher professional level and high-purity LN2).

Life Sciences Internship

Histology is the study of the structures of cells and tissues. Student will learn about the morphology of cells and the architecture of tissues, as well as how those structures indicate and facilitate the functions of cells and tissues. Histology focuses on the normal, how cells and tissues should appear in the absence of disease or infection. Understanding the normal will allow student to identify changes that occur to cells and tissues during disease. Student will learn basics of the most commonly used staining system that is called H&E (Haemotoxylin and Eosin). Student will get microscope and hundreds of slides for identification of cells (muscle and brain cells, fibroblasts, astrocytes and adipocytes), cell compartments (nucleus, cytoplasm, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, intracellular membranes), extracellular fibres and materials (carbohydrates in cartilage), and various types of H&E stained tissues. Eosin is an acidic dye: it is negatively charged and stains basic (or acidophilic) structures red or pink (e.g. cytoplasm). Haematoxylin is used to stain acidic (or basophilic) structures a purple-blue.

Biotechnology Internship

These are professional medical manikins that require learning how to use software, as well as perform training of many types of pre-hospital and in-hospital emergency procedures – from basic assessment to advanced life-support skills. Student will learn operation and control of the software, training simulation, including blood pulses, ECG, CPR, and many other assays and features. The goal of this project is to learn more about medical devices, scenarios to replicate realistic clinical experiences and clinical practice.
